Chinatown Boardroom Announces Chemical Imbalance - August 5th - 26th, 2011

Chinatown Boardroom is pleased to present Chemical Imbalance, a solo exhibition featuring alternative processed surf photography by Elizabeth Pepin Silva. Opening reception will be held on First Friday, August 5th, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., 2011. This show will run for the month of August. Silva prefers the magic of film and in the past few years has been exploring alternative process photography. She utilizes a variety of film stock, cheap cameras, and developing and printing techniques, including using garbage found on Oahu’s beaches instead of photographic paper to produce unique photographic sculptural pieces.

Over the years Silva’s photographs have appeared in numerous museums, galleries, newspapers and magazines around the world, and in five books on women's surfing including: Surfing: The New World Order (Duke University Press 2010) and Surfing: Women of the Waves (Gibbs Smith Publishers 2008). Silva states “I am constantly fascinated by water and the people who are attracted to it; the ever changing light and mood of the water, and the unique connection people have to the ocean.”

A separate meet the artist event will take place on Friday August 19^th, 6:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. This will be an opportunity to meet Silva and discuss photography.

Silva is also a documentary filmmaker and writer whose works include award winning films: Coastal Clash, a PBS documentary on problems facing our coastlines, and One Winter Story, an hour-long look at the life of big wave surfer and scientist Sarah Gerhardt, and her book Harlem of the West: The San Francisco Fillmore Jazz Era (published 2006).

Hello Chinatown

Chinatown Boardroom is pleased to present Hello Chinatown a solo exhibition featuring Koji Toyoda. Opening reception will be held on First Friday, July 1st 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., 2011, show runs for the month of July. Hello Chinatown will feature new works by Toyoda including surfboards, this collection of “happy” surf art, his art will make you feel good and bring a smile to your face. (A portion of the proceeds from the show will be donated to the victims of the March 2011 Japan Tsunami.)

Toyoda was born in Osaka Japan in 1962; he began surfing in his early teenage years. Toyoda held his first art exhibition at the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum in 1997. In the surf art community Toyoda has become internationally renown. Over the years he developed a deep appreciation and fascination with surf lifestyle and surf culture. Toyoda’s artistic style expresses his surf-inspired feelings and messages about the environment, life and the ocean.

Chinatown Boardroom is pleased to present encoded scapes a solo exhibition featuring Ted Lincoln, opening on First Friday, November 5th, 2010. Lincoln creates abstract contemporary Asian influenced paintings by utilizing a variety of mediums. His work is a combination of Sumi ink, acrylic, automotive clear and rice paper on aluminum panel. Lincoln obtained his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2000. He currently lives and works in Florida. Join us for the Meet the Artist reception on November 10th from 6 - 8 p.m.

Honolulu’s very own well-known and loved artist, punk rocker, actor and cheesecake baker, Otto has done it again. Revenge of the Killer Red Ants: Part V opens October 1, 2010; this show features mixed media, consisting of, edible, recycled and sustainable art. Who knew? Cleveland, Ohio, has had a surfing community since the early 1960s. Director Scott Ditzenberger’s debut film explores this underground scene. We see Vince Labbe and his friends endure harsh winter weather to surf the elusive waves of Lake Erie in a place still recovering from lost jobs and a river polluted enough to catch fire. In a 2006 article on Ditzenberger’s work in progress, the New York Times reported, “They surf in Cleveland because they must. They surf with two-inch icicles clinging to their wet suits. Through stinging hail and overpowering wind. They work nights to spend their winter days scouting surf. They are watermen on an inland sea.” Out of Place took the Viewer’s Choice award at the New York Surf Film Festival this year.

The latest from Chris Malloy (A Brokedown Melody) chronicles Jeff Johnson’s surf-and-climbing trip inspired by Yvon Chouinard (founder of Patagonia, the company) and Doug Tompkins’ (founder of The North Face) epic 1968 Ventura-to-Patagonia (the region) adventure, which was documented in the killer film Mountain of the Storms. The two iconic eco-heroes appear in the Patagonia wildlife preserve that Tompkins founded in 1991, so it’s no surprise that the journey and the film end up being as much about conservation as riding waves and climbing peaks.

Last Paradise: An Eco Adventure Film 45 years in the Making

The son of wildlife photographers, New Zealand director Clive Neeson’s life was one big adventure. The film starts with his parents’ footage of his action-packed 1960s childhood then graduates to Neeson’s own footage—from vintage shots of surf spots Noosa Beach, Petacalco, Spain, Portugal and Bali to proto-wakeboarding and snowboarding. Over time, Neeson saw that his 45 years of records of good times, faraway places and adrenaline-pumping feats could tell a larger story. Neeson reveals how the journeys of a generation of adventurers shaped their lives, values and vocations, and how they paradoxically laid a foundation for eco-tourism. These early sports pioneers’ exploits were rarely captured on quality film footage and most of it was kept under wraps to avoid exposing the secret and fragile refuges—until now.

You’re invited to the Bangladesh Surf Club, which introduces a highly unconventional surfing method to more than 30 boys and girls, many of whom are poverty-stricken street kids. Due to a fearful, conservative culture, the ocean was once deemed off limits to these children, who now see surfing as a source of fun, escape, and even a way to make a living. The film follows professional surfer Kahana Kalama (a past guest star of Fuel TV’s series On Surfari) as he works with Hawaii-based nonprofit Surfing The Nations and learns that sometimes surfing involves more than catching waves.

“This series of 1970’s cartoon cowboys and their rugged individualism are juxtaposed with eastern philosophy buzz-words and created specifically for this neighborhood. I love the collision of East and West on the streets of Chinatown where I have lived and worked for many years, and am fortunate enough to have help with the translations from friends in the neighborhood.”

These four-by-seven foot scrolls serve as a bridge between neighborhood galleries and Chinatown residents, Eastern calligraphy and western pop culture. There are four pieces made with acrylic, shellac, wood stain & velvet flocking on paper and available for $850. per piece.

Surf Discussion Series is beginning for this year 2010 with guest speaker Duke Boyd!

Chinatown Boardroom is pleased to have Duke Boyd as a speaker for the 3rd Thursday of the month Surf Discussion Series. Duke Boyd is the author of Legends of Surfing: The Greatest Surfriders from Duke Kahanamoku to Kelly Slater. This book is a glorious celebration of surfing culture. Part exquisite picture book and travelogue of the best surfing spots on earth, part biography and reference guidebook, Legends of Surfing profiles over one hundred great surfers, men and women, from throughout the world along with surfing writers, filmmakers, board builders and photographers. In life stories, and in exclusive interviews, with notable surfers this book offers a rare firsthand look at what it’s like to live to surf. Boyd is himself a legend of surfing, and has been honored at Legends Day by the California Surf Museum. He is a surfer, of course, but even better known as co-founder in 1962 of Hang Ten surf-wear, the first surf-wear clothing line. Chinatown Boardroom is honored to have Duke Boyd speak about Legends of Surfing on January 21, 2010. The Surf Discussion Series creates a forum for people to meet and discuss surf related topics including but not limited to, educational discussions & book signings in a casual comfortable atmosphere.

Friday, January 15, 2010 marks the first Slow Art Friday, which will be held on the third Friday of every month in the Arts District of Historic Downtown–Chinatown from 5 to 9pm and beyond.

Slow Art Friday celebrates the Opening Nights for art exhibits, and provides special local, organic, and traditional food and drink recipes at neighborhood bars and restaurants throughout the Arts District.

Slow Art Friday is a new monthly event celebrating Honolulu culture in our pedestrian friendly urban core. It is a new, slower paced alternative to First Friday, with artist receptions and opportunities to foster a deep and fulfilling appreciation of the arts.

Slow Art Friday is also designed to support one-of-a-kind businesses, and to keep dollars in the local economy.

Slow Art Friday provides an evening for art lovers to view, discuss, and enjoy the Arts District at a slower pace, allowing time and space for thoughtful interaction and meaningful connection. Slow Art Friday seeks to encourage a shift towards slowing down, taking time to enjoy the moment, and fostering deeper connections to art, to people, and to life. Beneath the Surf

Chinatown Boardroom is a big supporter of our beautiful ocean. We love waves, to look at and to ride, but we have yet to explore what lies below.

Beneath the Surf will showcase underwater photography by Erin Pfuntner. In 2004, Erin moved from California to Hawaii where she currently works in the dive industry as a Divemaster and USCG Boat Captain. While working in her profession, she has been able to further her love of the ocean through photography. Erin is a firm believer in giving back to the things she loves. She volunteers with local conservation groups as well as educates others on the importance of the marine ecosystem. As a tribute to the ocean, which makes up more that 70% of the Earth’s surface, this art show will focus on what lies beneath the surf. Chinatown Boardroom will donate a portion of the proceeds to Surfrider Foundation – Oahu Chapter.

Chinatown Boardroom is please to present Monster Mash a group art show that opens on October 1st, 2009. Each artist was asked to create a monster to be mixed and mashed. Chinatown Boardroom is please to announce Ricky Grigg as the speaker for this month’s 3rd Thursday of the month Surf Discussion Series. The Surf Discussion Series coincides with The Chinatown Arts District 3rd Thursday events. Ricky Grigg's life is one of adventure, from big-wave surfing to deep sea diving & oceanography, a marriage of sports and science. In the '1960s Ricky Grigg was known as one of the best big wave surfers of the era, in 1967 Surfer Magazine rated him No.1 in the world. He won the Duke Kahanamoku Invitational Surfing Championship in 1966 and 1968. Ricky earned a Ph.D. from Scripps Institute of Oceanography and became a professor at the University of Hawaii. He has authored a number of books about surfing, science and the ocean. Ricky Grigg will be discussing Environmental Fallacies and he will be available for a book signing. The Surf Discussion Series creates a forum for people to meet and discuss surfing, culture and life.

She is an illustrator / designer, she was born in Peru, grew up in Miami and currently lives in Hawaii. Her style is characterized as retro-inspired her artwork combines drawing, photography and digital media. Her use of color and texture is drawn from her love of the Hawaiian Islands.

2009 Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction

Event producer Randy Rarick has done it again! This year's auction is already shaping up to be the biggest and best yet. As has become the tradition, veteran surfboard designers, shapers and manufactures will be in attendance, including Matt Kivlin, Joe Quigg, Greg Noll, Dick Brewer, Ben Aipa, Bing Copeland, and Ole Olson, amongst a host of others.

Surf stars of the '60s the likes of Jock Sutherland, Fred Hemmings, Ricky Grigg, Joey Cabell, Buffalo Keaulana and many others will also be on hand. They will be joined by short board pioneers of the '70s & '80s: Pipeline Masters Gerry Lopez, Rory Russell and Jeff Crawford; as well as world champions Mark Richards, Peter Townend, Shaun Tomson, and Tom Carroll, all of whom will have personalized surfboards from the various eras. They will be joined by revered Hawaii surfers Larry Bertlemann, Barry Kanaiaupuni and Bobby Owens.

Never-before-seen surfboards have been unearthed, including an ancient 1850 breadfruit board, turn-of-the-century redwood planks, hollow paddle boards, design-changing early wood/fiberglass prototypes, big wave "guns" of the '60s, and pro boards of the '70s and '80s.

Along with the treasure trove of surfboards will be an eclectic selection of Hawaiian-theme artwork, surf contest items, unique island-influenced surf memorabilia, some of the first images of surfing ever depicted in print from Missonary times, off-beat surf advertising from early media, and other rare finds.

The ever-popular "Antiques Road Show"-style appraisals will be back again for those curious to find out the value of personal surf collectibles.

killer red ants

killer red ants opened on oct 4th, friends enjoyed the picnic fair without any red ant attacks. all artwork is made on recycled material, with paper mache and paint. works range in sizes from 4 inches to 10 feet tall. ants have never looked so good, simple colorful and some even glow in the dark. many of the pieces have sold so hurry down to enjoy the show and maybe you will find an ant to take home.
